macbook core duo 2.0 battery problems

The Problem,

The battery indicator on the power supply has a green light indicating that the battery is fully charged even though the battery is dead. The status up at the top in OSX says "not charging". I checked the cycles of the battery and it is at about 180.

Background,

I left the Mac book with the lid closed but still on and the battery died, I’ve been looking for a house so I didn’t get back to it for a couple of days. After those days of a dead battery it now seems that the battery will not charge no matter how long I leave it plugged in.

More Background,

I am a PC technician, someone brought this Mac book into my shop with a broken screen and a new replacement screen. The owner of my shop swapped out the screen but could not get the backlight working. The person who dropped it off did not want to pay the bill so the Mac book sat for about a year. I then tore it apart and put everything back together correctly and the backlight then worked fine (BTW if you haven’t replaced a screen the whole Mac book has to be disassembled). I have been using the Mac book for about four months. I have used PCs my whole life but this little Mack book kicks *** for normal end user stuff. The battery life was great about 3-4 hours on average.

Steps Taken,

Tried leaving the Mac book plugged in for 48hours, tried taking the battery out and leaving it out for 24hours, tried turning the Mac book off then back on by holding the power button for 5secs, tried turning the Mac book on by holding something like control option Lshift then hitting the power button.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you for your input ahead of time.

My approach would be to drop in a test battery, and if that works, the battery is defective. Service providers have access to an Apple proprietary battery test utility that runs from a USB memory stick, that would also confirm the batteries status. You could try installing the latest battery update, Apple suggests this, but I've never seen it recover a battery once its failed. More likely the battery has failed, this does happen.

Thank you for the reply. I will take my Macbook to an apple store so they can hopefully swap out the battery for a new one to see if that solves the problem I just hate not being able to fix things myself... but I don’t want to buy a battery on a hunch

Try resetting your SMC see if that allows it to charge.

sounds like you have the same macbook i have which the battery died about two months ago. i think the batteries from that time are weak. my replacement lasted 7hr 45min much high then said.

I forgot to look back at this thread, sorry all. Turns out it was the battery I ordered one through a wholesale place for about $110.00 US.

If I had to guess it was probably a fault in the battery its self and draining it completely brought the issue to light.

Again to anyone who was looking to this thread to solve a similar problem I am terribly sorry I forgot about this post.
