I am buying a Uni Macbook this week, and my question is should I get a refurb 2.4, or a new 2.0? Either way I will be upgrading the RAM and HD. Just want a little input from my favorite Mac community.

I'd be curious to see what others say to your question. I've been curious if the refurbished units were straight from the Apple manufacture or if they're from some third party company just trying to turn a profit and don't put to much quality into refurbed units.

They are from Apple, I am even contemplating a new 2.4. Just trying to maximize my money. I am selling my current Uni MBP 2.4 because I don't do anything that requires the 9600 or the screen.

Just want a laptop for mobile school work, and the occasional photoshop of family photos. I use my desktop for all things intensive.

You know, I honestly think it's 6 in one hand half a dozen in the other. I, as well, was between a brand new 2.0ghz or a refurbed MBP. Because I was at the store and the computer was being offered as a gift to me right then and there... I went with new. I didn't update the ram or the harddrive (in 4 years of having a 60gb iBook, I still have 15gbs left on it!), and the speed is amazing. I'm not sure what you'd be running on yours but let me give you a little example of what I have run simultaneously:
iTunes, GarageBand, 3 internet windows in Safari, 4 in mozilla, 6 different messenger conversations in 3 different messenger programs, Preview.
When iTunes and GarageBand were open together, I had a song playing in iTunes that I was playing the built-in piano along with in GarageBand.

Another time I ran:
Preview, Mail, 6 web pages open in 2 different browsers, 5 chat conversations in 3 different chat programs, a video chat, iTunes.

I'm on the 4th day of having this baby, and I haven't heard the processor or the fan once. So, if it's speed you're worried about, I wouldn't... especially if you're updating the ram and hdd anyway!

Now, when I asked a mac genius about refurbed vs. non at the store... here's what he said to me:
When you buy a new computer, you may or may not get some refurbed parts in it. When you buy a refurbed computer, you don't know what went wrong with it before... but again, some parts in it are going to be new and some are going to be refurbed and you won't know which. Neither, in his opinion, were more likely to break down on you, and shopping refurbed - especially if you're not a student and don't get the discount - is a good way to save some cash, and just as valuable because you can still get the extended warranty.
I hope this helps your decision-making process! :)

The refurbs are fine, they are from Apple and have effctivelly been through quality control twice

I vote for the 2.4 simply because of the backlit keyboard.

I had 2 mac refurbs. The first was a refurbished Ibook, the second was a refurb white macbook. Both refurbs were flawless. Other than the packaging an apple refurb comes in and the serial number, it is near impossible to tell a refurb from a new mac. Apple refurbs also come with the same applecare warranty that a new mac comes with. My current unibody is not a refurb, I went new this time, but I would have no hesitation purchasing a mac again. That being said, I went with the 2.4, I didn't need the excess power at this time, but you never know when I may need it. i would rather have the excess processor speed and not need it, then need the extra speed in the future and not have it. I am also becoming a HUGE fan on the backlit keyboard. I never knew how useful it is, now that I have the backlit keyboard, I couldn't go to a computer without it.

This is exactly the reason I recommend it to everyone. You'll never go back to a regular keyboard after you've used a backlit one.

I got a refurb 2.1 ghz white mb.

The only difference is the box. The whole outside has been changed on most, and any broken parts have been replaced by new ones. Then, as louishen said, they go through quality control AGAIN.

2.4 For sure.

Don't you guys have the keyboard pretty much memorized, though? I have no trouble typing in the dark w/o backlighting.

So now, it has been narrowed down to Education Discount New 2.4 vs refurb 2.4

$100 difference, new vs refurb?

Any new thoughts?

You just won't understand how beneficial it is until you've used one and have to go back. No words will be able to make someone truly understand until they experience it. I won't EVER buy a laptop again unless it's got a backlit keyboard.

Ah. Well then I hope to never try one, because I can't afford to only buy the models w/ it! hahaha this one was expensive enough!
