Macbook Pro, dual screen?

Hey, I've got a new Macbook Pro and I'm about to be doing some video editing, so it would really help to have dual screens. Is there a way for me to use the mini display port adapter to my external monitor while using the laptop's screen as a second display at the same time?

Just turn off mirroring in displays under system preferences and you can use each display separately.
