Powerbook G4 10.3.5 ambient light sensor

Hi all,
I have a G4 running 10.3.5. I can't really say when it happened but I've just noticed that my keyboard does not light up anymore. I've looked up several options for turning on and off the function. The suggestion from the Apple site askes me to look in both display and keyboard in preferences. Their is no "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" or "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" option. I can't say if this is a change in 10.3.5 or some earlier version.

Anyone ever encounter this and come up with a fix

yeah i had the problem too, it wasnt the first problem, i had a white line on the screen. Then I noticed that. Its being repaired now... a faulty logic board was the cause.

Do the currently shipped PowerBook G4's not have keyboard backlighting? Because I went into System Prefs and then Keyboard and there was nothing to click that said anything about keyboard backlighting.
I searched mac help and it said "if your model is equipped..." so does mine just not have it?

I thought that the backlit keyboard is only on the 15in superdrive and the 17in powerbooks.
