Hi Guys / Gals ,

I have decided to upgrade my old Rev B and installed a new hard drive .
I installed OS 9.0.4 on it , this is in the first partition under 8 GB .

The problem is the drive won't recognize it . When i start up from my install CD however i can find the new system folder there, but when i look at System Profiler it says the only system folder present is on the install disc .

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Did you push the reset button when you installed the new drive? You need to do this so that the computer will recognize new hardware. Also, did you format the new drive with the Apple utility or a third-party utility? When I swapped a new drive into my rev D model I set it up in an external case and formatted it with HDT. I then cloned the original drive contents to the external disk. I removed the new disk from the case and installed it as the internal disk. It didn't work and it showed the same problem you have. I had to reformat & partition in the iMac with Apple Disk Tools to get it to work.

When you say the reset button i presume you mean one of the holess by the USB ports .

There are two . One has a little triangle symbol the other has a litttle squiggle type symbol . Which one do i press ?

Since i upgraded OS from 8.5 . My original specs in Help menu are no longer there .

Thanks
Paul

The reset button (aka: CUDA button) is located on the main board. On the tray-loading iMacs it is located near the rear edge of the main board, between the processor card and the external ports. It has a square base, about .25" per side and a small round, rubber button on top. If you didn't push it once (and only once) before you reinstalled the chassis in the iMac you should open it up and do it now.

Hi Badger ,

I have tried the reset button but to no avail . The iMac still won't start up without the install CD . Yet as i said before when it does start up i can see my newly installed System Folder . But it just won't start up from it !

This is driving me quietly insane . Every time i try somthing i end up putting my old 4 GB drive back in so i can access the web and ask how to cure the problem .

On the positive side i now know the inside of my Bondi Baby like never before .
Any other ideas ?

Thanks in advance

One other hardware possibility. Did you check the jumper settings on the new drive? I don't remember the specifics but I remember that I had to change the jumper from the factory to another setting. I think I changed it from master to cable (or cable to master, it has been several years). I would check the new against the old drive. If they are not the same then try matching the new setting to the old; if they are the same change the new one to a different setting. Sorry I didn't think of this sooner.

Badger,

I reconfigured the jumper like you said and have now also upgraded to OS 9.2.2 .
You have saved me from the brink of madness .

Thanks for your help
