How can I stop the screen from dimming after five minutes of inactivity, because i regularly watch movies over that length and the screen dims whilst they play.

i believe you mean the one that says 'Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep'?

If so, I unchecked that ages ago, but the screen still dims itself....

It's a bug in the iMac (as well as the macbooks I believe). You'll need to check and uncheck the box each time you start the computer for it to work. The easy solution would be not to shut down the computer and just put it to sleep (and log out if you like) when you done with it for the day.

You're lucky if your mackbook doesn't have that problem, unless you always put it to sleep rather than shut down the computer, but it affects intel macs in general http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304092

My 20" iMac has this problem as well. Also have a macbook but I don't notice it because I never shut it down.

Aha, my MBP does this, and I didn't realise it was a known bug. Surely they'd issue some sort of fix?

that link was from 2006...you'd think they would have fixed the problem with the different firmware updates since then
