I am from the PC World (Boo hoo) and need to get my wife a Mac to do basic video editing (assembling JPEGs into a "Movie" with sound). We have been doing this with our Dell...what a pain in the butt...
Anyway, we are on a budget and don't want to spend the $$$ on a Power Mac...what are the major disadvantages of an i-mac vs Power mac for basic home use with some video editing tossed in???

An iMac will do the job just fine but will take longer to do it. Get the best processor speed you can get and upgrade the ram yourself as that will be cheeper than doing it directly at the apple store.

Just thought of something? What happens if the LCD goes out? Getting a replacement would probably be expensive? Not like the $199 you can buy at the local electronics store...right???

This is a Mac not a dell. When i got my first iMac i thought the same thing but it's still running great, I very much doubt if the new iMacs are any different. Apple use good quality stuff, but if your really concerned you could always get a Mac mini. I got a mini for my son with a samsung screen, I hate the screen, it's no where near the same quality as the iMac screen. Wish I got a Mac screen instead but then getting an iMac would have been cheeper.

The extra power of the Power Mac is more suited for hefty applications such as major professional video production and rendering. The IMacs won't be slow by any means for what you want to do.

The LCDs are rock solid from what I've heard.

The only factor is that you'd be better off with an Intel IMac rather than a G5.
