Ok, so I'm burning some home-made DVD's in Toast and I noticed its taking about 30 minutes to burn onto a DVD-R. Its not Dual Layer and the medium is a Fuji 16X DVD-R. This is for burning at full capacity 4.37GB I notcied in the write options it says: 1X, 2X, Best So I don't think its really recording at 8X speed since my 4X DVD-R Pioneer on my PC burns at half the time with the same medium and capacity. Perhaps I'm not seeing an option somewhere?

Do you burn movies on your Pioneer?

I burn a lot of video and it takes a while, writing menus, sound, video, et cetera. It takes time.

Yeah, the model of the Pioneer is DVR-105 and I'm using it to burn movies from my camcorder of my nephews and nieces. Usually takes about 15 minutes to write to the same medium, full capacity. On my iMac it takes double, when I thought it would take half the time then the Pioneer.

Have you selected 8X instead of Best in the menu? It is weird that that's all you are doing and it takes so long. I am stumped!

Me too!! The only options I see from the speed dropdown box in Toast is 1x, 2x, and Best. And I'm pretty certain it doesn't take 30 minutes just to write 4.37GB on a 16X DVD-R medium. The superdrive is suppose to write at 8x DVD-R right? Perhaps my iMac doesn't like the Fuji medium which is the only explanation I can think of.

Ok, I've been doing some research on the internet and found countless info. on superdrives, not limited to just Apple. It seems there's been quite a number of issues on superdrives, more specifically the write speeds and media. Almost everyone's superdrive I've read about will only write at 2x MAX regardless what media and write speed. Interestingly enough it seems as thought only Apple bought media will actually write at 8x speed. It seems as though its a firmware related issue, which I'm hoping it is and not a recall based one.

So this is not and issue for just the iMac's but ALL superdrives.
