Question Locked out of hard drive
    Hi,
I recently upgraded to High Sierra and for some reason it has revoked permissions for the main hard drive.
It seems to have only given write permission to "system".
I am the administrator and I log in to my profile. I then click on the lock, then on the + symbol and click to add my, but it says I do not have permission to do that!
Means I can't download anything or write to hard drive, very frustrating.
Anyone know how to get around this?
    Thanks

    Specs:
    iMac, i7 4GHz, 32GB memory, 1TB Flash Storage, OS X.12.6.
Click on the little padlock lower right.

See if Your name comes up, and if so change it to Read and Write. You may have to log out of your profile first and system and system Read & Write is normal.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

I may be missing something here, but here's a screenshot of my Macintosh HD -

Looks the same as yours. So I don't see the immediate problem. And the OP has tried unlocking the padlock and adding his name - which was disallowed.

I note in passing that although on macOS High Sierra, your HD is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from which I presume it is a spinning platter or Fusion Drive?

What you're seeing is normal for permissions. Have you tried to write to your hard drive after High Sierra was installed? Tell us what the results of that try was.

You are not supposed to have R&W access to the entire drive. As a regular user you only get access to your home folder. As ad admin user you get access to a bunch more folders like Applications and so on.

It's strange, it only appears to block me from writing to the drive from some apps (UTorrent etc) while others work.
Perhaps some apps are no longer compatible with High Sierra.
