    iMac won't reboot
I have a 2011 27inch i7 iMac. After an unexpected shut down yesterday it won't reboot. I get the start up tone and the grey screen withe the progress bar but it stops half way through the process. Any suggestions appreciated.

I hope you have everything backed up.

Try booting in Safe Mode. If some software is hanging up then Safe Mode will keep it from loading. If it boots in safe mode start asking yourself what have you recently installed or updated?

If that does not work try going into the recovery mode and run disk repair.

Post back what you find out and we can go from there.

Sounds like your hard drive just went south. Try what Lisa suggested especially about booting to recovery and checking the hard drive.

Booting in Safe Mode gives the same result. Booting in Recovery Mode shows the Apple logo and the progress bar till it gets half way then both disappear and leave me with a plain grey screen. I have everything backed up using Time Machine to an external 1TB WD Elements hard drive.

I have also tried booting frm an external flash drive which has Mavericks installed on it. Gives me the spinning wheel then shuts down.

The hard drive is very likely dead. If you have everything backed up you should be OK when replacing the hard drive. You can view the procedure for changing the hard drive out yourself at www.ifixit.com.

Just as a postscript to this small saga I eventually took the offending machine to an approved Apple reseller/service outlet. It turns out that it was the video card that was at fault (a known problem with this particular model). That was the bad news the good news was that Apple agreed to replace the card (even though it had already had this fault rectified in 2014) thus saving me a considerable outlay, I think video cards are around $700 + labour.

With the money I saved I upgraded the RAM to 12 GB.

I cannot praise Apple enough for its customer focus with this issue it will certainly ensure that I stick with Macs!!

That will be a great consolation Wardy on Wednesday next when you cane toads get mauled!
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
