    Thanks for entertaining a real novice here.

    I am having a problem with my imac, (bought 2007 and love of my life). My pictures have lost definition, the white on the screen seems way too bright and the darks way too dark, Quite often on internet, is now impossible to see images, just white voids. The text is also "bitty" and unclear. This has happened gradually. I have reset all the personal settings etc (sorry again apologies for not being very technical) but no luck there.

    I nearly got to the bottom of this through finding another person's experience on this forum, but my kids dragged me away, and I lost the thread, literally. The crux of this other user's problem and solution seemed to be that the problem wasn't there if she created another login. SO I have got another log-in set up, and the pictures on this second log in are perfect. Is there a way of correcting the images and screen issues on my core log-in? I can't work out ways of transferring all my photos, data, documentsetc over to my new log in.

    If anyone has any ideas I would be extremely grateful!

    It sounds like your original account has become corrupt or something has changed your display settings. When you created the new account it set everything back to the default as far as display preferences are concerned.

    Rather than try to troubleshoot the original account, it might be easier to copy everything over to the new account. Once you've verified that all your applications, documents, and settings have copied over, you can remove the old account.

    Log on to the new account (make sure you have admin privileges) and open your old user name from the Finder. Before copying, we need to ask.... what version of OS X are you running?

    Thanks so much for replying. It's 10.6.8. I thought you were going to say that about old log-in. I will give that a go.

    The reason I needed to know which version of OS X you're running is that after Snow Leopard (Lion and Mountain Lion) the user Library is hidden by default. You should be fine though since you're using Snow Leopard. It's an easy task to copy the user library from your old account to the new one.

    One other thing I do recommend though.... is make a backup with Time Machine before you begin.

    It certainly sounds to me like someone (or the cat) have hit the magic combo of keys to turn on the high-contrast mode. Take a look in "Accessibility" (aka "Universal Access" on older Macs), check under "seeing" or "display and see if the "enhance contrast" slider isn't mover the right a bit ...
