I have just bought a scsi PCI card for my Mac G5 (ok, I bought it off e-bay, ok it only cost me $1.99). Much to my suprise/horror it doesn't fit! I thought PCI cards were standard across all machines? With this card, when you line the gold teeth up with the slot, the end panel is anout 3/4 of an inch inside the machine!

Do G5's have to extra special long PCI cards?

G5 macs older than current use 64bit PCI bus. In addition although the PCI specs are essentially the same, Apple may have requested different specs on the board configuration for their PCI slots. You may have to get a card that was made for the Mac.

Older PCI cards that need 5V will not work in the G5, or the last G4 models. The actual G5 (dual core) has PCIe slots (aka PCI express) which, unlike the PCI-X used in the older G5, is not compatible to PCI.

Macs are very picky with PCI cards, especially when it comes to SCSI cards. If it isn't one made for Mac, or at least with Mac driver support, it will not work.
