why does my imac g5 only recognize 1.5 gb

i have 2 1gb sticks it recognizes one as a 1gb stick and 1 as a 512mb stick the maximum accepted is 2gb and that what i have in there

Are you absolutely positive that one of the sticks isn't a 512meg stick?

When you go to the "Apple" drop down menu...and select "About this Mac"...how much ran does that window say your iMac has?

Another question might be...Are you absolutely positive it's an iMac G5?

From the first model G5 iMac 2GB and later 2.5GB is the maximum. Tell us about the memory. Purchased from a Mac compatible dealer by any chance and single sided modules?

Related to Harry's question above. Where did the ram that's in this iMAc G5 come from?

Mac's (especially older Mac's) can be very sensitive to what ram is installed in it. If you don't know where the ram came from...it's most likely not fully Macintosh compatible...and probably came from a Windows computer.

one is a crucial stick and that shows up as 1gb
and 1 is a stick that says dell that shows up as 512

I would almost be positive that "Dell" stick is the problem. But even Crucial ram can be non-Mac compatible if it doesn't meet the specs for a Mac. You pretty much have to pull each of the sticks...insert one at a time...reboot the computer...and that will tell you for sure which stick isn't be read properly (unless you're already sure which stick is the problem).

Bottom line...one of the sticks isn't Mac compatible.

You're right about that, Macs do not like double density modules. I've got a drawer full of those babies left over from my PC repair days. Can't even give em away!
