    Specs:
Imac 27" Retina 5K, 512GB flash memory, 3.3GHz, 16GB memory, macOS Sierra beta.
Got whatever system installed boot disc? If so boot from that and check out the hard drive.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

    Specs:
Main-11" Air, iPhone 6+, iPad Mini 3, Hi-Fi Extras- Too many to count
Try reinstalling the OS that is all that it should need.

    Specs:
    Black MacBook 2.2GHz C2D, 4GB Ram - iMac G4 700MHz, 512MB Ram
It sounds to me like the Hard Drive is either dead or dying. Is this a tray-loading or slot loading iMac G3? The Hard Drive replacement methods are quite different from each other. (although neither are terribly difficult)

You can find old IDE hard drives 60GB and below for next to nothing nowadays, (literally $5 or free, some people have tons of them lying around.) Size doesn't really matter as long as it's below the iMac G3's max size of 128GB.
