    iMac on my HDTV
I have researched this a little bit and am pretty confident that it will work fine, but I have a few questions about this set up.

I would like to hook my iMac up to my LG 42 inch 1080p HDTV. I believe the best method for this would be to purchase this device

    http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

And another HDMI cable to run to my HDTV.

    2 questions
    1. When it is hooked up, will my desktop be 'extended' or will my HDTV mirror my iMac? Or do I have the option?

    2. Can anybody find that device cheaper on the web or in a store? 30$ is not a big deal but waiting until 4/22 is a little silly I think. I searched for about 30-40 minutes one night on eBay and could not find a Mini-DVI AND USB(for audio to the HDTV) so that I don't have to depend on the speakers from my IMac.

    Thanks

I can answer your first question. When it is hooked up you can either use your iMac display as your main display or secondary display. You will be able to choose which display is the main display by hooking up the display then going into System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays. Then from here you drag the Menu Bar ( located at the top of the screen) to which ever display you want to be your main.

Good luck, if you have any problems just ask.

First some clarification. The adapter you settled on is a mini displayport (mdp) to HDMI. Then you talk about looking for a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. These are not the same thing. DVI and displayport are two separate and distinct connections as are their mini cousins.

Your iMac has a mdp, so it's a good thing you didn't find a mini-DVI adapter as it would not have fit. Second, the mdp on your iMac will output audio. So, there is no need to get some adapter that combines audio and video.

I would suggest reading through the first 4 posts.

Related specifically to your questions you'll find post 2 item 3 and post 4 to be useful.

or is it one of these that i need?

    Moshi - $35 from Apple

Kanex iAdapt HDMI v2 - $21 from Amazon when it's in stock - please note the "v2" in the name - if it's not v2, it won't carry audio

Griffin Video Display Converter - $27 from Amazon. This is a dual adapter providing you with the capability of HDMI connection or a DVI connection.

If it were me, I'd try the one from monoprice just because the price is right. That's a new adapter for them. Just a month or two ago, they did not yet have one that would pass audio.

Thanks, I'll add that one to the sticky thread.

    edit:
Looks like they pulled the old adapter and put this one in it's place. Middle of Feb is when the reviews switched over to indicating audio support.

just so i understand fully, the one from monoprice IS ABLE to do AUDIO as well?
    it says on the page..
Note: This product will support audio on Mac computers capable of outputting audio through mini-displayport. Additional configuration may be required, results may vary depending on mac model and OSX version installed
i'd say my odds are good right?
