return or not to return...new IMac desktop
    Hello,

I really need some input. I just bought a new 27 1/2" IMac desktop, I was super excited about owning a mac and have wanted one for years but it seems to be having a couple of issues already.

I have had to manually shut it down now 3 times already. Twice it was froze up on simple programs like iPhoto, once it got stuck on an internet page and wouldn't get out of it and after walking away and coming back 1/2 hour later it was still "working".

So, I'm concerned that my new IMac wasn't a good choice. I don't know if they are prone to some problems but I've read in some other forums that people are having similar problems with them freezing. Wondering if the laptop I was going to buy was a better option.

My concern lies also in the fact that I bought it from BestBuy and tomorrow (Friday) is my last day to return it or I'm sol.

Anyone else have problems with their new mac? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks-
    Kim

Kim - new Macs have a one year warranty if u take it to Best Buy they will send it out. I would rather choose and Apple Certified Repair outfit that has a good rep.
Apple sorted a new logic board on my MBP that was 6 months out of warranty for a known fault.
First - what changes have you made to your Mac since u got it. How far away is a Genius Bar?

I haven't made any changes to my Mac since I got it. And, I'm in a smaller town so I assume that a genius bar is somewhere that you take Macs to get fixed?

I guess I am worried that the operating system or my Mac itself is defective and so am wondering- should I take it back now or regret it in 3 days when the 14 day policy is done. Or, should I go back and exchange it for the MacBook Pro that I was originally going to buy- wondering if the laptops are better products than this desktop and if I just made a hasty purchase!

    Thanks----

Apple release millions of computers so there is always a chance that Production Quality Control will miss a few, even if the Fail Rate is less than 1%. If it is not doing what u would expect of a new Computer then Return it for a Replacement, not a fix, as that is an Apple issue to sort with their Billions of profit. Whatever, even with a new unit you are not
and tomorrow (Friday) is my last day to return it or I'm sol.
If u get no joy from Best Buy then phone Apple and insist.

Try and do a fresh install first to see if the problem remains. If it does, you should definitely do a return.

Have you tried troubleshooting on your own at all? Sounds like a software issue. Try repairing permissions, if your woes still persist, reinstall the OS. If they still persist, call Apple. The heck with Best Buy (I work there, but I wouldn't let the geek squad near my mac... see the other post in the anything goes forum about 'are you your family's geek squad?' and you'll see why), Apple will service your computer with class and get everything working perfectly for you. Seriously, they have the best customer service and best warranty in the business.

Don't worry about the OS... Macs (unlike most other computers, which baffles me) actually come with restore discs! FOR FREE! =-O The iMac is a great machine. Maybe yours has some faulty hardware (but it sounds like it's just the OS... you can either reinstall the OS with the discs, or try repairing permissions like I suggested). You're not going to want to return it to best buy to get a MBP. What will end up happening, if you send it to Apple, is they will ship you a box to send them the machine in (they overnight it and pay for shipping). You drop it off at your local DHL/FedEx/UPS place, they overnight it to Apple. They overnight you a brand new iMac (so save your data first). This should take care of any of the woes you were experiencing.

Remember, you didn't make a hasty purchase. You are considering making a hasty return on what is a ridiculously nice piece of hardware. Don't return it. If anything, if the problem persists, send it to Apple and have them send you a new machine.

No, you should not do a return. Wesley has apparently never dealt with Apple's repair service, because they are excellent, and is clearly underestimating the awesome power of the hardware that you have purchased.

It doesn't matter whether you bought it from Best Buy or not it still has a 1 year warranty from Apple. If possible go to apple.com and do a search for the nearest apple store and they will take care of you.
