Question iMac G3 Disk Drive put into PowerMac
Hello. I just have a question which is, I have an iMac G3, and a PowerMac G3. The iMac is dead, but the last time it worked, the drive to read disks (whatever you want to call it!) was working. I also have a PowerMac G3 that works just needs a new disk reader so I can install an OS to play around with the old thing. So, I was wondering that if I took apart the iMac and put that disk drive in the PowerMac to replace the broken one, if it would work??? I want a disk drive in the thing! Please respond and help! Thanks! (PS the only reason I'm asking instead of just trying it, is because sometimes the iMac does work and before I kill it for good I just want an answer of yes or no if this would work)
    I got's me's: Acer Aspire 5515 Vista Basic 3GB RAM 160GB HD 1.60GHz, iMac G4 Leopard 10.5 768MB RAM 80GB HD 1GHz, eMac G4 Tiger 10.4 512MB RAM 40GB HD 800MHz, iBook G3 Clamshell Tiger 10.4 576MB RAM 10GB HD 350MHz

Here is a guide on how to dismantle a G£ IMac

    Google Image Result for http://www.kevinomura.com/macs/imacg3/cdroms.jpg

The drive will fit, but you will have to take out the drive door on the powermac and figure out how to support the optical drive in the blue and white's drive bay

If you have a spare $30 then you can put a modern DVD burner in the G3 tower

Okay! Thanks a lot! If I decide to go though with it, this will really help! So the drive will work with the PowerMac 100%?

There were 2 types of iMac G3's, they either used a tray or slot loading laptop style optical drive. The Powermac G3 uses a 5.25" desktop optical drive. They are physically different and although both use an ATA interface, the connectors are completely different too. ATA 5.25" optical drives are cheap, I'd either buy a new one for the Powermac, or scrounge one from a dead Powermac B&W G3, G4 or eMac.

I have a Mad Dog cdrw in my B&W. Many high end drives will work in the B&W.
